Class 77.5 does not come from density. There is no pounds-per-cubic-foot range for it, and any chart that gives you one has invented it.
Where it comes from instead
This class is not produced by the density scale. It comes from specific NMFC items that name it outright, so there is no density band to quote - which is why the charts that give you one are working from something other than the classification.
Thirteen of the eighteen freight classes are produced by the density scale, so for those a density tells you the class. Class 77.5 is one of the five that are not. It is named by the NMFC item covering the commodity, and the only way to know whether it applies is to know which item number your freight falls under.
How to find what applies to you
Start with a previous bill of lading or your carrier’s rating tool, since the item number should be on one of them if you have shipped the commodity before. Bear in mind that Docket 2025-1 took effect in July 2025 and moved a great deal of freight onto the density scale, so a fixed class that was right before then may not be now.
